    Richard E. Ernst is Scientist in Residence at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada, and also professor at Tomsk State University (TSU), Russia. He has been regularly visiting Russia and collaborating with scientists from the country since 1990. His MSc was from the University of Toronto (1981) and PhD from Carleton University (1989). He researches all aspects of Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs): flood basalts, plumbing systems of giant dyke swarms, sill provinces and layered mafic-ultramafic intrusions, magmatic underplates, associated kimberlites, carbonatites and silicic/felsic provinces, and links with mineral, metal and hydrocarbon resource exploration, supercontinent breakup, catastrophic environmental/climate change including mass extinction events, and planetary analogues. He is the author of a 2014 textbook on Large Igneous Province (LIPs), published by Cambridge U. Press, and he has been co-leader (2003−2013), and leader (since 2013) of the LIPs Commission of IAVCEI. According to Google Scholar he has an h-index of 57, an i10-index of 163 and total citations of 15600.
